Hantavirus, headlines and keeping calm: what businesses should know
“Is it going to be another lockdown?” is probably what’s going through the minds of most business owners in the UK right now because of recent conversations around hantavirus. For many, a lockdown means preparing for the harshest of winters, i.e, declining sales, macroeconomic restraints and hoping your business doesn’t take consistent monthly hits like it did during COVID. For newer businesses, it’s the fear of running at a loss before you’ve even had the chance to get off the ground.
But there’s no need to panic… yet.
The UK Health Security Agency has been clear that the overall risk to the UK public remains very low. There is currently no evidence of widespread transmission in the UK, and importantly, hantavirus is not something that spreads easily between people. Unlike COVID, it doesn’t move through populations in the same way, which makes large-scale disruption far less likely. So while the headlines may trigger concern, the reality is far more contained.
Still, it’s worth understanding what hantavirus actually is.
WHAT IS HANTAVIRUS
The hantavirus is an airborne contagious virus primarily carried by rodents. The WHO says they are “ Zoonotic viruses that naturally infect rodents and are occasionally transmitted to humans.” Humans typically become infected through inhaling airborne particles that come from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces where contamination has built up over time. However, it is not classed as a highly contagious airborne disease in the way many people assume. As such, transmission is environmental rather than person-to-person in most cases.
In simple terms: if your workplace has any level of rodent activity, poor waste management, neglected storage areas, plant rooms, bin stores, or spaces that are rarely cleaned, those are the environments where risk can quietly exist. It’s less about sudden outbreaks and more about overlooked hygiene and maintenance gaps.
Symptoms of the Hanta virus includes;
Fever and chills
Headaches and muscle aches
Fatigue
Nausea or abdominal pain
In more severe cases: kidney issues or breathing difficulties
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR BUSINESSES
From a corporate perspective, hantavirus isn’t really a “people problem” rather, it’s an environmental problem. That shifts the responsibility directly onto how spaces are managed, cleaned, and maintained day-to-day. Warehouses, commercial units, accommodation blocks, and even office back-of-house areas can all become risk points if basic hygiene standards slip.
The issue is that these risks don’t usually sit in plain sight. They build up in the background, in bin stores that aren’t monitored closely, in storage rooms that get ignored, or in corners of buildings that fall outside regular cleaning schedules. By the time they’re noticed, you’re already reacting instead of preventing.
A MORE PRACTICAL RESPONSE
As a commercial enterprise, you should look out for commercial cleaning companies like R3FM, who specialise in cleaning and maintaining facilities to a high standard, as they can help tighten up operations so you have less to worry about when it comes to hypotheticals. Good hygiene, consistent cleaning, and proper site management are what stop small risks from turning into bigger, more disruptive problems.
R3FM supports commercial spaces with professional cleaning, sanitation, PPE support and infection-risk cleaning procedures that help businesses stay ahead of the curve. Whether it is offices, warehouses, accommodation blocks, showrooms, industrial spaces or communal areas, our job is simple: keep environments clean, and safe.
For commercial spaces, this is the moment to ask:
Are high-touch areas being cleaned properly?
Are bin stores and waste areas being managed?
Are forgotten corners, cupboards, plant rooms and storage spaces being checked?
Are staff using the right PPE where needed?
Would you know what to do if rodent contamination was found on site?
If the answer is “not sure”, we are offering free site inspections to help businesses understand where risks may be hiding and what practical steps can be taken.
The best response to any outbreak concern is preparation and at R3, we like to be prepared. It is much cheaper, cleaner and less stressful than firefighting later.
So while the public health risk remains low, the message for businesses is simple:
Keep calm. Clean smarter. Stay ready.
