How to Clean Office Blinds Without Damaging Them
The safest way to clean blinds is to match the method to the material. Wood, aluminium, fabric and vinyl all react differently to water and chemicals, so a few minutes of checking first can save you from replacing them.
In a commercial building, blinds collect dirt faster than most people expect. Dust settles on every slat and fold, air conditioning and open windows blow in grime and pollution, and kitchens and meeting rooms add grease and smoke. The wrong cleaning method can make things worse. Too much water can warp wooden slats, harsh chemicals can strip colour and coatings, and rough scrubbing can bend aluminium or mark fabric.
R3 can clean your blinds professionally, quickly and with minimal disruption to your business. If you’d rather tackle it in-house or you’re working to a budget, follow our step-by-step DIY guide below.
Step 1: Check the material and the care label
Look for a care label or the manufacturer’s guidance, especially on fabric, roller and Roman blinds. If you can’t find one, test your cleaning method on a small, hidden area first. Wooden blinds and some fabrics don’t tolerate soaking, and some coatings strip with harsh products.
Step 2: Plan the work and stay safe
Clean during a quiet period and use a stable step ladder for high windows. Wear gloves, and check the safety data sheet for any product as part of your COSHH assessment. Never mix cleaning products, as bleach combined with acids or ammonia can release dangerous fumes.
Step 3: Dust the blinds
Dust is the main culprit, and removing it first stops it turning into streaks when you add moisture. For venetian and slatted blinds, close the slats and wipe along each one with a microfibre cloth, then flip them and repeat. For fabric, roller, Roman and vertical blinds, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on a low setting. A lint roller works well for light dust on fabric.
Step 4: Spot clean marks and stains
For small marks on aluminium, vinyl or faux wood blinds, use a cloth dampened with warm water and a few drops of mild detergent. For fabric blinds, dab the mark gently and don’t rub, which can spread it or damage the fibres. For wooden blinds, use a barely damp cloth and dry straight away, because water can warp and stain the wood.
Step 5: Deep clean by blind type
Aluminium, vinyl and faux wood: wipe each slat with a cloth dipped in warm, mild soapy water and wrung out well. For heavy build-up, slats can be soaked or cleaned in a bath, but only for blinds that are fully waterproof.
Real wood: don’t soak. Wipe with a lightly damp cloth, dry immediately and apply a wood-safe polish if recommended by the maker.
Fabric, pleated and Roman: vacuum, then spot clean. Only wash them if the label allows it.
Roller and vertical: wipe vinyl and PVC with a damp cloth. For fabric, follow the care label or spot clean only.
Step 6: Rinse and wipe
Wipe over with a cloth dampened in clean water to remove any soap residue, which can leave blinds sticky and attract more dust.
Step 7: Dry completely
Dry the blinds with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, and leave the slats open or the fabric fully extended until they are dry. Trapped moisture can cause mould, rust on metal parts, warping and watermarks.
What if the blinds still look dirty?
If marks remain, the dirt may be ingrained, or the material may be too worn to recover. Heavy nicotine, grease and mould staining often need specialist treatment, and some blinds can’t be cleaned safely in place. Ultrasonic cleaning removes dirt from every slat without damaging them, and in some cases replacement is the better option.
How to keep blinds clean for longer
Dust blinds every week or two as part of your regular cleaning schedule, and add a deeper clean every few months in busy or high-pollution areas. Wipe up splashes straight away, keep blinds away from grease in kitchen areas, and keep windows clean so dust doesn’t blow in.
When to call a professional
DIY works well for light dust and small marks. For large offices with many windows, high or hard-to-reach blinds, delicate materials or heavy staining, R3FM has the equipment and training to get the job done safely and consistently, with minimal disruption to your business.
